but the thing is alive so it will fight back
This project is about the relationship between womanhood and AI. Prompted by a shared concern about the lack of regulation in emerging AI software, we decided to read Laura Bates’ The New Age of Sexism: How the AI Revolution is Reinventing Misogyny. Determined to understand the everyday woman’s perspective on these issues, we conducted a workshop and discussion panel.
We photographed everyone who took part; an ID photograph. Next, we created an algorithm which resizes the pixels and crops the images at random. We used these arbitrarily selected images to design and make garments, quite literally transferring face to body. Through this, we intend to materially illustrate the deepfake process, highlighting the disconnected and fragmented treatment of the female body throughout our modern digital landscape.
Through improvisation, India Mall, a contemporary dancer, performed a physical response to the disorienting feeling of wearing another’s face, allowing the work to be reinterpreted.
This is the beginning of an ongoing interest in this subject matter. We intend for the work to serve as a catalyst for discussion rather than a finished product.
